Bystander recounts terrifying moment alleged carjacker lunged at him with knife
A bystander's heroic attempt to protect two children during a carjacking and police pursuit in Sydney's south-west has been captured on video. The incident unfolded on Saturday when a 36-year-old man allegedly lunged at the bystander with a knife.
A dramatic scene unfolded in Sydney's south-west on Saturday when a 36-year-old man allegedly carjacked a vehicle with two young children and led police on a short pursuit.
The incident began around 3pm in Lakemba, where police were conducting a welfare check on the man, who then fled with the children, his sons, in a vehicle. A short pursuit ensued through the Campsie area but was called off due to the manner of the man's driving.
The car crashed at the intersection of Parramatta Road and Bombay Street in Lidcombe, about nine kilometres away. It was there that members of the public attempted to intervene after the father got out of the car with the boys.
Nicholas Karagiannis, a 46-year-old bystander, was driving along Parramatta Road when he came across the crash scene. He attempted to protect the two children during the chaos that followed.
