Wild pursuit and carjacking in Sydney's west leaves two children injured

A chaotic series of events unfolded across Sydney's west, culminating in a carjacking, collision, and stabbing, leaving two children with minor injuries. The ordeal began when a 36-year-old driver, who police were attempting to conduct a welfare check on, refused to pull over in Belmore.

"When the driver allegedly failed to stop as directed, a police pursuit was initiated," NSW Police said in a statement. The pursuit continued into Auburn before it was terminated due to the manner of the man's driving.

The driver then proceeded to drive on the wrong side of the M4 Motorway, where he collided with an oncoming vehicle. Following the crash, he exited the vehicle with two children on board and allegedly attempted to steal another car.

A 25-year-old man intervened, and during the ensuing scuffle, he suffered a stab wound to his hand. The offender then allegedly stole a woman's vehicle, who had stopped to assist, and forced the two children into the car before speeding off westbound along the M4 Motorway.

The vehicle was eventually stopped on the Cumberland Highway at Wentworthville, where the offender was apprehended by an off-duty police officer with the assistance of bystanders. He was taken to hospital under police guard.

The two children were taken to Westmead Children's Hospital as a precautionary measure, suffering from minor injuries. Police are still awaiting the opportunity to interview the man as they work to piece together the events that transpired.
