Renowned finance presenter David Chau has embarked on a remarkable journey to demystify finance for a wider audience. With a background as a litigation lawyer and a passion for storytelling, Chau is set to bring a fresh perspective to the world of finance journalism.

A Long and Winding Road

David Chau's path to becoming a finance presenter has been anything but straightforward. With a career spanning almost a decade, Chau has covered some of the most significant financial events in recent history, including the tariff war between Donald Trump and Australia's largest trading partner.

"That first year was particularly exciting, with Donald Trump waging a tariff war against Australia's largest trading partner and causing huge market shocks nearly every day with his stream-of-consciousness tweeting," Chau said. "In that regard, the situation has not really changed. But in other ways, things have become worse, particularly when it comes to our living standards."

The Cost of Living Crisis

Chau highlights that buying a home has become more unaffordable than ever, despite the recent downturn, while Australian households are now carrying the second-highest amount of debt in the world after Switzerland. He also notes that extremely high-risk and speculative investments have exploded in popularity, particularly bitcoin, other cryptocurrencies, and artificial intelligence.

"It is no wonder the cost of living has become the most popular discussion topic in our nation, for all the wrong reasons," Chau said. "That is why I am excited to be spending more time with you in the years ahead, demystifying finance on the 7pm News, making it more relatable (and even fun) for a wider audience."

From Law to Journalism

Before becoming a finance presenter, Chau was a litigation lawyer. However, he found the work unfulfilling and decided to pursue a career in journalism. Chau's background as a lawyer and his experience as a litigation lawyer have given him a unique perspective on finance journalism.

"I did not really enjoy suing people," Chau said. "As you can imagine, my career was off to a promising start. After five years of sending threatening letters and trying to sound like a legal tough guy, I decided it was time for a change."

A Personal Connection

Chau's interest in finance and economics was sparked by his father's experiences as a Vietnam War refugee. Chau's father, Hong, emigrated to Australia from Vietnam and struggled to find work.

"My dad was a judo instructor and goldsmith before the Fall of Saigon," Chau said. "When he moved to Sydney, he did not speak English, nor did his qualifications transfer very easily. He was only able to find factory work."

The Road Ahead

Chau is taking over from the legendary Alan Kohler and is determined to make finance more accessible to a wider audience.

"I hope you come along with me on this journey, perhaps even for the next couple of decades if I am lucky and able to match Alan's record," Chau said.
