Is the Blue Mountains Snow Day Gone Forever? Climate Shift Erases a Century of Winter Magic
As New South Wales marks its 30th consecutive warmer-than-average winter, the once-reliable snowfalls of the Blue Mountains are rapidly vanishing. Long-term residents share their memories of a bygone era of snowed-in streets and white winter wonderlands.
New South Wales is currently navigating its 30th consecutive warmer-than-average winter, and with this warming trend, one of the state's most beloved seasonal traditions is quietly slipping away. For over a century, the high altitudes of the Great Dividing Range were synonymous with pristine winter snowfalls. Today, those postcard-perfect winters are fast becoming a distant memory.
Before the turn of the millennium, snow was a regular and expected feature of the colder months across the region. In the higher parts of the Blue Mountains—located just 30 kilometres from the western fringes of Sydney—at least one or two significant snowfalls were almost guaranteed each year. Historic winters frequently dumped more than 30 centimetres of snow across towns stretching from Katoomba to Mount Victoria.
A History of White Winters
Local archives paint a vivid picture of a much colder past. In 1900, the state's largest recorded blizzard dumped nearly a metre of snow on the Blue Mountains, 70 centimetres on Bathurst, and reached as far west as Forbes. A decade later, in 1910, trains arriving at Sydney's Central Station from the mountains were still heavily piled with snow.
Even into the late 20th century, severe winter weather regularly made its presence felt. In July 1986, light snow was briefly observed in Sydney's northern suburbs, and in 1990, Oberon recorded snow on 13 consecutive days. Today, however, it has been four years since snow has settled on the ground in the Blue Mountains, marking the longest snow drought on record.
Generations Share Memories of the Deep Freeze
For long-term residents of the mountains, the lack of snow is a bittersweet shift. Many remember when a heavy winter dump meant closed schools, community excitement, and neighbors helping each other shovel driveways.
Edward Thomas, whose family moved to Leura in 1955, vividly recalls a massive storm from the mid-1960s. "I was visiting my fiancée in Katoomba on a Saturday when the snow started falling silently," he said. "I looked out the window to see my Morris Mini completely blanketed. I somehow managed to drive back to Leura with the car sliding sideways up Leura Mall. The next morning, we woke up to a scene straight out of a Christmas card. The snow was so deep it filled my gumboots, and we were snowed in for days."
Other residents recall the yearly excitement of snow days. Gary McGuigan, who has lived in Katoomba since 1969, noted that during the 1970s and 80s, heavy snow was an annual certainty. "Over the years, I have certainly observed a steady decrease," McGuigan said. "It seems like nowadays it is more about every five years or so between a decent dump."
Stuart Driver, who grew up in Blackheath, remembers how local schools would close at least once a year due to the weather. "It was not a question of if it would snow, but how often and how deep. Now, it is well and truly if," he said.
The Science of the Melting Winter
The vanishing snow is one of the most visible indicators of a warming climate. Because the Blue Mountains sit at a relatively modest peak altitude of about 1,100 metres, most snowfalls occur at temperatures right around the freezing mark. It only takes a minor increase in temperature to transform what would have been a heavy snowfall into cold rain or sleet.
Over the past 50 years, the average winter temperature across New South Wales has risen by approximately 1 degree Celsius—and by 1.5 degrees since the early 20th century. This shift is climate-system critical; it effectively converts a snowy 0°C day into a wet, slushy 2°C day with no chance of accumulation.
Furthermore, atmospheric circulation patterns are shifting. A expansion of tropical wind patterns has pushed cold fronts further south toward the Southern Ocean. At the same time, East Coast Lows—the intense low-pressure systems historically responsible for some of the heaviest mountain blizzards—are also in decline. When freezing temperatures do occur, there is often not enough moisture in the air to generate snow.
Tracking the Shift Without Official Data
Interestingly, the decline of regional snow is difficult to track through official channels, as the Bureau of Meteorology's automated weather stations do not record snow accumulation outside of the alpine ski resorts. Instead, historians and local enthusiasts have stepped in to preserve the record.
Blackheath resident Lindsay Pearce runs the most extensive private archive of Blue Mountains snowfalls, dating back to the early 1800s. His meticulous, event-by-event database confirms what residents have long suspected: the region is in the midst of an unprecedented, multi-year snow drought.
For some, the lack of snow is a relief, bringing fewer highway closures and lower heating bills. But for the majority of the mountain community, the loss of the winter snow represents the quiet fading of a defining local identity.
