A chance encounter via email has blossomed into a beautiful love story for Vyshnavee and Thiru, a couple who have been together for almost 15 years.

Their story began in 2011, when Vyshnavee and Thiru were set up on a blind date by a mutual friend. The first sign of genuine chemistry was the ease of banter, with Thiru describing himself as a "dark-skinned Brad Pitt" and Vyshnavee joking that she had the physique of a female bodybuilder.

Their first date was at Grasshopper Bar in Sydney's CBD, where they got caught up in conversation and hung out until the early hours of the morning.

A differing worldview, despite shared heritage

Despite sharing Sri Lankan Tamil heritage, Vyshnavee and Thiru grew up very differently, which shaped their perspectives on the Australian identity and their place within it.

Thiru grew up in Sydney's Northern Beaches, where cultural diversity was virtually non-existent, while Vyshnavee grew up in Western Sydney, surrounded by a diverse array of migrant and refugee communities.

As their worlds merged, this friction felt pronounced, with Thiru often venturing across the Harbour Bridge to experience Vyshnavee's cultural melting pot, and Vyshnavee feeling like an outsider in Thiru's affluent neighborhood.

"He grew up in Sydney's Northern Beaches, at a time when cultural diversity was virtually non-existent. I grew up in Western Sydney, surrounded by the continual waves of newly arrived migrant and refugee communities," Vyshnavee said.

"When Thiru would often venture across the Harbour Bridge to see me, he was treated to authentic and affordable dine-out options from a broad array of cultures. When I hung out with him in Narrabeen and Manly, I could feel the enquiring eyes of locals staring at me."

Friendship and emotional security

Vyshnavee says that her relationship with Thiru is grounded in friendship and emotional security.

"We've come a long, long way together," Vyshnavee said. "A 15-year relationship has led to a lot of shared milestones and challenges: moving interstate, marriage, therapy, home ownership, fertility struggles (mine) and an ADHD diagnosis (his)."

Despite their differences, including Thiru's love of sports and Vyshnavee's passion for the arts, they have found a deep connection and understanding with each other.

"Our relationship is by no means perfect, but somehow, amongst life's logistical tango, there's an underlying friendship and emotional security that's helped us persevere through it all," Vyshnavee said.
