Hollywood Glamour Meets Local History: Lane Cove Public School Celebrates 150 Years
Lane Cove Public School marked a monumental 150th anniversary on Friday with a community-wide celebration. The historic milestone featured a surprise heartfelt video message from former student and Oscar winner Nicole Kidman.
A Milestone 150 Years in the Making
Lane Cove Public School was filled with nostalgia, laughter, and a touch of Hollywood glamour on Friday as hundreds gathered to celebrate the historic institution's 150th anniversary. The milestone open day brought together generations of former students, dedicated teachers, and local families to reflect on a century and a half of educational excellence on Sydney's Lower North Shore.
A Surprise Message from Santorini
While she couldn't attend in person, the school's most famous alumnus, Academy Award-winner Nicole Kidman, made sure she was part of the celebrations. Sending a heartfelt video message from Santorini, Greece, the superstar congratulated her alma mater in a recording played to a packed school hall.
"I wish I could be with you," Kidman shared warmly in the video. "I remember running around that playground. I made friends that I'm still friends with now… and I'm so grateful that I went to such a great school."
The surprise message was a massive win for current students, who had previously launched a heartwarming video campaign on social media to invite the star back to her old stomping grounds.
Alumni Walk Down Memory Lane
The anniversary event also welcomed back prominent media personality Peter Overton, who served as school captain in 1977. Standing on the familiar grounds, Overton reminisced about starting at the school over five decades ago.
"You know when I first came here? 55 years ago," Overton told the crowd. "I have so many happy memories of this school." He fondly reeled off the names of his former teachers, noting how fortunate he felt to have attended the local primary school. Overton also conveyed warm wishes on behalf of his close friend, Kidman, adding, "Happy birthday from Nicole."
Among the crowd of alumni was Meredith Lucas, who attended Lane Cove Public School alongside Kidman from kindergarten to year six (1973–1979). Lucas recalled singing in the school choir with the future Hollywood star.
"It was a very close-knit school and community," Lucas recalled. "I applaud her for all her successes. She's a natural talent, she's a hard worker, she came from a good family and a good community."
A Proud Legacy of Creativity
Lane Cove Public School Principal Terry McKinnon expressed immense pride in both past and present students. He revealed that Kidman’s video message arrived just in the nick of time for the big day.
"It came in very late today and we were very happy to play it," Mr. McKinnon said. "It's great to hear from all our alumni, but particularly Nicole after we invited her to this event. We're extremely proud of her, as we are of all our alumni."
First opened in 1876, Lane Cove Public School has long been a cornerstone of the Lower North Shore community, particularly renowned for its strong creative arts and music programs. As the school looks toward the future, this weekend's celebrations proved that its rich history and community spirit remain as strong as ever.
