Man killed in targeted shooting at Sydney community centre car park

A man has died following a shooting in south-west Sydney, which police have described as a targeted incident.

Paramedics treated the man at the scene in a car park at a community centre in Punchbowl, but he could not be saved. NSW Police were called to the site at about 5.50pm on Wednesday following reports of a shooting, with a crime scene now established.

Police say a silver Lexus sedan was spotted driving away from the area after the incident. The man has not yet been formally identified, but Acting Superintendent Dean Johnstone said police believe him to be a 32-year-old man who was known to police.

"This is a callous act," he said. "The implications of this act could have easily endangered other members of the community."

"Those actions cannot be tolerated," Superintendent Johnstone added.

A witness to the incident said he heard multiple gunshots and ran to provide first aid to the victim.

NSW Opposition Leader Kellie Sloane acknowledged the shooting in a post on social media, noting it was the third incident of its kind in the city over the past week.

Police say no further information is available at this time, with investigations ongoing. Anyone with information about the matter is being asked to come forward.
