Silent Crisis at Deen Maar: Victoria's Premier Fur Seal Colony Facing Devastating Collapse
A mysterious pollution-linked illness is causing severe hair loss among fur seals on Deen Maar Island, driving a catastrophic 65 percent decline in pup births. Local Indigenous custodians and marine scientists are launching an urgent investigation to trace the toxic source before this genetically unique colony is wiped out.
A remote sanctuary off Victoria’s southwest coast is ground zero for a devastating ecological crisis, as the state’s once-thriving Australian fur seal population faces a catastrophic decline driven by industrial pollution.
Deen Maar Island—also known as Lady Julia Percy Island—was once celebrated as the nation's largest breeding ground for Australian fur seals. However, recent ecological surveys have revealed a grim reality: the number of pups born on the rocky outpost has plummeted from more than 2,000 annually two decades ago to just 700 in the latest count.
The Fatal Toll of Alopecia
Local Indigenous custodians and marine scientists tracking the decline have identified a severe outbreak of alopecia, or hair loss, as the primary driver behind the population collapse. The condition, which causes bald patches on the seals' heads and backs, strips the marine mammals of their natural waterproofing and insulation.
Dave Williams, Sea Country Coordinator for the Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation, warned that the physical toll on the seals is devastating.
"When their hair falls out, they can't keep warm," Mr. Williams said. "If they can't spend much time in the water, then they can't feed for as long. It is a domino effect. The pups who depend on their mothers suffer, ending up much smaller, and without enough fat to keep warm, they often do not survive their first year."
The latest population data indicates a staggering 40 percent decline in pup numbers since 2017, and a massive 65 percent drop since 2007.
Toxic Footprints in the Water
While baldness in wild fur seals is virtually unheard of elsewhere in Australia, the phenomenon is heavily concentrated around Deen Maar and nearby Cape Bridgewater. Researchers suspect localized industrial pollution is to blame.
Dr. Rebecca McIntosh, a marine researcher with Phillip Island Nature Parks, noted that while larger colonies like Seal Rocks on Phillip Island rarely record a single case of alopecia, the issue is rampant in Victoria's west. Recent tissue samples from the island’s resident little penguins revealed alarmingly high concentrations of heavy metals, including aluminium and titanium, pointing to industrial activity in nearby Portland as a likely source of contamination.
Additionally, studies have detected persistent organic pollutants, PFAS, and human-waste-derived E. coli in seals across the Bass Strait, suggesting a complex cocktail of environmental stressors is impacting the marine food chain.
A Threat to Species Survival
The collapse of the Deen Maar colony carries dire consequences for the survival of the entire species. Having been hunted to near-extinction by commercial sealers in the 19th century, Australian fur seals suffer from extremely low genetic diversity.
According to Dr. McIntosh, Deen Maar holds a unique genetic signature, likely serving as the ancestral source population for most modern fur seals. Losing this colony could permanently compromise the species' ability to adapt to future challenges, including climate change and the looming threat of the highly contagious H5N1 bird flu strain, which was recently detected just 25 kilometers away in Portland.
Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation Sea Country Manager Mandy Watson emphasized that the seals' plight is a warning sign for the entire marine ecosystem.
"Seals are top predators at the apex of the ecosystem," Ms. Watson said. "If this pollution is degrading their health so severely, it is undoubtedly causing silent harm all the way down the food chain. We must find the source of these pollutants before it is too late."
