Sydney Shooting: 11-Year-Old Boy in Critical Condition After Norwest Home Incident
An 11-year-old boy is in a serious condition after being shot in the face and neck inside a unit in Sydney's Norwest. Three men have been arrested in connection with the incident, which police do not believe is related to organised crime.
A serious shooting incident has left an 11-year-old boy in a critical condition in a Sydney suburb. The boy was shot in the face and neck inside a unit in Norwest, with police confirming that three men have been arrested in connection with the incident.
Emergency services were called to Fairway Drive in Norwest just before 5pm on Monday, where they found six people inside the home, including the injured child. Superintendent Naomi Moore described the scene as an "absolute tragic situation", with police rendering aid to the boy before he was taken to hospital for life-saving treatment.
"The other occupants were a 44-year-old female and four 18-year-old males," Superintendent Moore said. "Some were relatives and others were friends of the child."
The boy's mother is currently with him at the Children's Hospital at Westmead, where Superintendent Moore said she was "distressed, as any parent would be".
Two of the arrested men are being held at Castle Hill Police Station, while the third is at Roverwood Police Station. All three are assisting with the investigation, although police have not confirmed whether one of them fired the shot.
Superintendent Moore said it was too early to determine what had occurred inside the property, and that the type of firearm used was still unknown. "In terms of the firearm, there are no registered firearms to that address," she said. "That again will be another line of inquiry for us to explore over the coming days."
Police have reassured the community that they do not believe the incident was related to organised crime. "We have nothing to suggest that it is organised crime-related, but we will conduct a very thorough investigation into this," Superintendent Moore said.
One resident described the scene as "frightening", saying he was driving home from work when he came across the intense police and paramedic presence. "I see this absolute insane scene, something out of the movies," he said. "This is something really unexpected of Norwest … it is quite frightening."
