Sydney's Rookwood Cemetery, the Southern Hemisphere's largest necropolis, is facing a crisis of space as it nears its 159th anniversary. The cemetery, which spans 190 hectares and accommodates graves for 140 religions and 250 languages, is running out of room, prompting concerns about its future.

Robyn Hawes, president of the Friends of Rookwood group, was transcribing graves at the cemetery in 1981 when she stumbled upon the names of her own relatives.
