Wild horse removal from Kosciuszko National Park faces legal challenge

A brumby advocate has launched a legal challenge to ban the removal of wild horses from Kosciuszko National Park, arguing that the methods used to control the population are unlawful. The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service has announced that aerial culling planned for the park will focus on feral deer and pigs, not wild horses.

A legal challenge has been launched against the removal of wild horses from Kosciuszko National Park, with a south coast resident arguing that the methods used to control the population are unlawful.

Carmen Jackson, a brumby advocate, has brought civil proceedings in the NSW Land and Environment Court against the Secretary of the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. The court heard that Ms Jackson had initially sought to stop the shooting of horses in the park, but with shooting on hold, she is now alleging that there was no lawful authorisation to use a method known as 'passive trapping' to remove horses from the park.
