Veteran Manly Prop Nathan Brown Confirms NRL Exit as Super League Move Looms
Manly Sea Eagles veteran Nathan Brown has announced he will leave the NRL at the end of the season to pursue opportunities in the Super League. The 33-year-old forward has been thrust into the starting lineup for this Friday's crucial clash against the Dolphins amid a severe injury crisis.
Manly Warringah Sea Eagles veteran Nathan Brown has revealed he will wrap up his NRL career at the end of the current season, with the hard-hitting forward set to secure a move to the English Super League.
Despite being contracted until the end of 2026, the 33-year-old prop has made the call to finish his time on Australian soil early, paving the way for a transitioning Manly forward pack. The announcement comes at a critical juncture for the Sea Eagles, who are desperately fighting to secure a spot in the finals.
Thrust Into the Starting Lineup
Brown’s final weeks in the NRL have taken on massive significance. Due to a severe injury toll in the Manly pack, the veteran has been called into the starting lineup for this Friday night's crucial clash against the Dolphins—his first start in two years.
With Manly likely needing to win all of their remaining four regular-season games to guarantee a top-eight finish, Brown is highly motivated to end his NRL tenure with a deep finals run.
"I just knew it was my time to call it quits in the NRL," Brown said of his decision. "I made my debut back in 2013. When your time's up, your time is up. The last thing I wanted to do was sit on the fence about whether I wanted to stay or head overseas. Making this decision has made it much easier to go all in this year, enjoy every moment, and appreciate every training session and game."
A Look Back at a Gritty Career
Brown first made a name for himself as one of the most aggressive young forwards in the competition when he debuted for the Wests Tigers in 2013, followed by a robust two-year stint with the South Sydney Rabbitohs.
However, it was at the Parramatta Eels where he truly played his best football. During his six seasons with the Eels, Brown earned two State of Origin appearances for New South Wales in 2020 and featured in the club's 2022 Grand Final appearance. After a period of uncertainty, he successfully revived his career at Brookvale on a train-and-trial contract ahead of the 2024 season.
Reflecting on his younger self, Brown admitted he has evolved immensely over the years.
"I find it funny looking back at old footage," Brown laughed. "When I started, I was much bigger, not as fit, and probably a bit overweight for my position. I also had a completely different attitude back then. But you learn a lot from those years, and I feel incredibly grateful for everything I had to go through to get here."
A Changing of the Guard at Brookvale
Brown's impending departure coincides with a broader roster rebuild for Manly's engine room. Fellow veteran prop Siua Taukeiaho is currently off-contract after suffering a double leg fracture in May, while the club has already secured the signatures of rising young forwards Davvy Moale and Toni Mataele for next season. Highly touted second-rower Kayliss Fatialofa is also set to arrive, while teenage sensation Simi Laiafi continues to impress coaches as a long-term prospect.
Despite the physical toll of a decade-plus in the top grade, Brown believes he is leaving at the right time.
"You don't want to finish your career just clinging on by a thread," Brown said. "Physically, I feel like I could probably squeeze out another year in the NRL. But mentally, I am ready for the next chapter."
Navigating an Injury Crisis
Manly's finals charge faces significant hurdles. The team will be without star prop Taniela Paseka for at least two weeks due to a knee injury sustained against Melbourne last week.
Compounding their selection issues, Ethan Bullemor remains sidelined with a concussion, while Kobe Hetherington (biceps) and Taukeiaho are out for the remainder of the season. Second-rower Ben Trbojevic is also unavailable due to concussion protocols, while superstar fullback Tom Trbojevic will be rested for another week as he recovers from a hamstring issue.
